Antarctica is one of those places that almost feels impossible to describe properly until you
experience it for yourself. I had no words when people were asking me what it was like.
Before I travelled there, I’d seen the photos, watched the documentaries, and read countless
articles, but nothing genuinely prepares you for the scale, silence, and raw beauty of the
White Continent.
One of the questions I get asked most is what an Antarctica expedition is actually like day to
day, especially onboard an expedition ship. I travelled with HX Expeditions, and it
completely blew me away.
This isn’t a traditional cruise. It’s an adventure.

The Journey to Antarctica
For many itineraries, the journey begins in South America, usually from Argentina. From
there, you sail across the Drake Passage towards Antarctica itself. You’ll often hear people
talk about the Drake Passage before they go, and yes, it can sometimes be rough, but it’s all
part of the experience. We were incredibly lucky and had “Drake Lake” both ways.
What surprised me most was how quickly the atmosphere onboard shifted from “holiday” to
genuine expedition mode. As you sail further south, everyone becomes focused on wildlife
sightings, photography, and the excitement of reaching Antarctica itself.
The anticipation builds day by day.
Life Onboard the Ship
One of the biggest misconceptions about expedition cruising is that people imagine it being
basic or uncomfortable. My experience with HX Expeditions was the complete opposite.
The ship felt relaxed, comfortable, and incredibly welcoming. Days onboard quickly fell into
a rhythm:
- wildlife spotting from the deck
- talks from the expedition team
- photography sessions
- incredible scenery constantly outside the windows
- amazing food
- planning the next landing
The expedition team were genuinely one of the highlights of the trip. Their knowledge and
enthusiasm made the experience feel immersive rather than just sightseeing.
The First Antarctica Landing
Nothing quite compares to stepping onto Antarctica for the first time.
The silence is something I still remember vividly. No cities, no traffic, no background noise.
It’s just you surrounded by ice, mountains and wildlife.
Then come the penguins. You will literally see thousands of penguins, and you’ll find
yourself smiling every single time you see them.

You’re surrounded by wildlife you’ve only ever seen on television, and because Antarctica is
so protected, the experience feels incredibly untouched and natural.
Every landing felt different. Some days were about towering icebergs and dramatic
landscapes, while others focused more on wildlife encounters or zodiac cruising through icy
waters.
Wildlife Encounters
One of the reasons no two Antarctica trips are ever the same is because wildlife sightings
constantly change.
During the trip, we saw:
- penguins
- seals
- whales
- seabirds
- enormous ice formations changing daily
Some moments felt genuinely surreal, particularly seeing whales surface close to the zodiacs.
For anyone interested in photography, Antarctica is unbelievable. Everywhere you look feels
cinematic.

Is Antarctica Luxury Travel?
Honestly, yes. Not in the traditional sense though.
This isn’t about designer shopping or beach clubs. The luxury comes from access,
exclusivity, and experience. Very few people will ever visit Antarctica, and even fewer will
experience it this closely.
It’s luxury through adventure.
You still have amazing cabins, fantastic food, and exceptional service, but the real value is in
the experience itself.

Would I Recommend It?
100%.
Antarctica became one of the most unforgettable places I’ve ever travelled to, not just
because of the scenery, but because it genuinely changes your perspective. It’s one of the few
destinations left on Earth that still feels truly wild.
If Antarctica is on your bucket list, I can honestly say it’s one destination that exceeds every
expectation.
