Madeira is one of those destinations that completely surprised me. Before visiting, I expected
beautiful scenery and warm weather, but if you’re like me and can’t sit still for more than 5
minutes, Madeira is PERFECT. For those who want luxury and adventure in one trip, this is
the place for you.
From dramatic mountain landscapes to ocean views, incredible food, and luxury hotels,
Madeira offers a completely different type of European escape.
I stayed at Savoy Palace in Funchal, and it was the perfect base for exploring the island.
Staying at Savoy Palace
The hotel itself feels incredibly modern and luxurious, with amazing views over the Atlantic
Ocean and easy access into Funchal – I’m talking 15 minutes.
One of my favourite things about staying here was that it gave you the best of both worlds.
You could spend the morning relaxing by the pool or enjoying the spa, then head straight out
into the mountains or along the coastline for the afternoon.
The rooftop views alone are worth mentioning, and to top it off, there’s an infinity pool at the
top.

Madeira’s Incredible Landscapes
What makes Madeira so unique is how varied the scenery is across such a relatively small
island.
Within the same day, you can experience:
- mountain peaks above the clouds
- lush forests
- dramatic coastal roads
- waterfalls
- volcanic landscapes
- beautiful ocean viewpoints
For anyone who enjoys scenic drives, Madeira is incredible. Almost every road seems to lead
to another viewpoint or hidden corner of the island.

The Famous Levada Walks
One of the highlights of visiting Madeira is exploring the levada walks.
These trails follow historic irrigation channels across the island and take you through forests,
mountains, tunnels, and valleys that feel completely untouched.
Some are easy walks, while others are more adventurous, but they’re one of the best ways to
experience Madeira properly beyond the resorts.
The scenery honestly feels almost tropical in parts.
You do need to do your research when it comes to the Levada walks though as some of them
highly recommend doing them with a guide, and some are often only open if the weather
permits. You can check the official Visit Madeira website before beginning.

Funchal’s Food & Atmosphere
Funchal itself has a really relaxed but sophisticated atmosphere.
There are fantastic seafood restaurants, local markets, wine bars, and waterfront areas perfect
for evenings after a day exploring the island.
Madeira wine is obviously famous, but the food scene in general really impressed me. Fresh
seafood, local produce, and traditional dishes all felt authentic rather than overly touristy.
Why Madeira Works So Well for Luxury Adventure
Travel
A lot of destinations tend to focus on either luxury or adventure, but Madeira manages to
combine both effortlessly.
You can:
- stay in beautiful 5-star hotels
- hike mountain trails
- go dolphin or whale watching
- take scenic coastal drives
- enjoy amazing restaurants
- experience nature without sacrificing comfort
It’s ideal for travellers who want something more active than a standard beach holiday, while
still enjoying luxury accommodation and incredible service.

Final Thoughts
Madeira genuinely exceeded my expectations and is a great destination for combining
relaxation, scenery, and adventure.
It’s the type of place that works equally well for couples, luxury travellers, hikers, or anyone
looking for a more unique escape than the typical Mediterranean holiday.
And once you see those mountain views in person, it’s very easy to understand why so many
people return again and again.
